I’m not talking going to the gym etc. Although this can be part of a more general resolution, like taking care of your body/health. What I am talking about are more ‘mantra’ like resolutions that will be much easier to stick to throughout the year, and that will increase your overall wellbeing. Curious yet?
Taking care of your body
So, this is where going to the gym, eating healthy and quitting all bad habits fit in. However, rather than limiting yourself, you should make finding a balance your goal. If you want that cheeky burger for dinner today, just make sure you eat all your veggies tomorrow. Life is about balancing the good and the bad. You are lying to yourself if you think that you can go from bad habits to quitting one day to the next. These things take time, just like how sculpting those abs will take a lot of time and dedication. In the end, hard work does pay off and you will find yourself so close to reaching your goals. Be kind to yourself, and allow yourself some time to slowly cut down on things and to gradually get used to exercising regularly. This way, you will make long term changes you can actually stick to.
It is no secret that we live in a rather f*cked up world sometimes, a world that can be unfair, cruel and just so damn disheartening. It is up to us to make it more bearable, and to ensure that humankind stays humane. The last couple of years, watching the news has made me so upset with the entire world. It made me feel useless, but I was wrong. There is something we can do to make a change, even if it is as simple as helping your local community, donating to charities or giving your seat up to someone that needs it more. It is these small things that put a smile on someone’s face, and it is this that reminds others that the world is still humane.
Looking after your mental health
I cannot stress enough how important this resolution is, whether you suffer from depression or not. Your mental health is not something to mess around with. We live in a world that is non-stop, but it is asking way too much of us. We cannot stay connected 24/7, we need to give ourselves a break every now and then. It is okay to take a step back and to just relax, read a book or watch a film. Go outdoors, spend time with family. Don’t push yourself, if you are feeling overwhelmed, uncomfortable, or just feel like you need a break, take that break. Earlier this year I wrote about why it is okay not to be okay.
Caring about the environment
This one goes without saying. No need to take extreme measures by going vegan, unless you are really dedicated of course! But switching it up to eating vegan every other day would already cut down a lot. Using public transport, limiting your use of plastic and buying local can all contribute. It is our shared responsibility to look after the only planet we are currently capable of living on, so lets look after it.
Stop comparing yourself to others – life is not a competition
Something that is easily done, but can be very toxic. Yes, recognising beauty in others, success by others etc. is a good habit. We should make 2018 the year of lifting each other up, giving credit where credit is due and complimenting strangers. However we should not let this get in the way of our own happiness or self-esteem. We are all individuals, we have different stories so we cannot compare ourselves. Our individuality is what makes us unique, so embrace it! How boring would the world be if we all looked the same and lived the exact same life?
Learning it is okay to give yourself some credit!
Last, but certainly not least, is giving yourself the recognition you deserve. Often, I realise that we could all do with a little more self-love. Why are we so mean to ourselves? I am a firm believer of the saying ‘would you say this to a friend, no? Then why say it to yourself?’ We need to become our own best friends. Or at least stop being so damn hard on ourselves! Appreciate your body, learn to love yourself flaws and all and own your confidence. You are worth it, and don’t let anyone else tell you differently!
